Assiniboine Forest is located within Winnipeg city limits. It’s one of the largest urban forests in Canada. It contains hiking trails, a pond and even some wildlife. If you’re luckyAssiniboine you might encounter rabbits, ducks, geese and even deer.
The trails are kid, dog and bike-friendly. It’s also an easy place to get to if you want to experience nature without leaving the confines of Winnipeg.
The Assiniboine Forest was originally going to be a development back in the early 1920s. Roads were even cut through the area to prepare for the development. However, when the stock market crashed in 1929, the development never came to fruition. The roads become walking paths, and local residents used the area for recreational purposes.
In 1973 the area officially became a municipal park.
